Hazari Prasad, a scrap merchant and a miser of the highest order, posed as in industrialist to befriend Mr. Mehra, a multi millionaire. His aim, to get his handsome Raaja (Aamir Khan) married to the only daughter Madhoo (Madhuri Dixit) of Mr. Mehra. And he succeeded. Raja and Madhoo, students of the same college, hated each other on sight. They were the victims of each others practical jokes. When the engagement was being announced, Mr. Mehra learnt of Hazari Prasads true state of affairs. He called off the engagement, and insulted Hazari Prasad. Now the parents were at loggerheads, while their children were slowly falling in love. Will Raaja be able to win over Madhoo? Will Hazari Prasad, forget his insult and allow Raaja to marry Madhoo?
